Despite delivering many fascinating details about Schreck's public body of work, Eickhoff freely admits he was unable to satisfactorally answer the question, since information on Schreck's private life was extremely difficult to come by. The mystery surrounding the man who played the screen's first Count Dracula in F.W. Murnau's 1922 masterpiece Nosferatu is one of the things that led to the long-running urban legend of Schreck's real-life vampirism--a legend Eickhoff reports was first jokingly popularized in a French ... Although this is a fairy-tale blog, sometimes I can't resist a deviation from the theme. Today, it's cold, rainy and gray in Northern Indiana, and since it is October, I'm in a Nosferatu kind of mood. Because ... before there was Edward and Bella before there was Coppola's regrettable Dracula in 1992 before there was Stephen King's super-awesome 'Salem's Lot , and a pretty good mini-series by the same name before Dark Shadows before all of those outstanding Hammer Studios vampire films before, even, Bela Lugosi in 1931's Dracula but after Bram Stoker's Dracula ... The creepy caped one is played by Max Schreck, sporting grotesque makeup that transforms him into a symbol of pestilence and decay. Not the trailer but the whole movie! For the first time we will have to whole Friday Fused Film Classic on the the site. I chose ... Read Full Story

Since its 1922 debut, F.W. Murnau's "Nosferatu" has remained the prototype for all notable vampire thrillers that aspire to be taken seriously as imaginative inducements to apprehension. In pursuit of this aim, the figure of the vampire Nosferatu (purloined from Bram Stoker's Dracula without respect for copyright) was not comely or disarming in the slightest. As embodied by Max Schreck, he was a wraith, at once skeletal and spidery...
