Former Mayor Charles Meeker led the charge to build the $221 million Raleigh Convention Center, pitching it as a key step in the revitalization of downtown.  

Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker, Chancellor James Oblinger and other dignitaries from across the Triangle area gathered Wednesday near the Bell Tower to celebrate the beginning of the Hillsborough Street construction project.  

Mayor Nancy McFarlane this morning officially welcomed Red Hat to downtown, saying the software company’s presence will help Raleigh become a national hub for open-source technology.
