Patrick Birmingham, president and publisher of the Corpus Christi Caller-Times in Texas, has been named president and publisher of the Knoxville News Sentinel. The Knoxville newspaper made the announcement on its Web site Wednesday after the 51-year-old Birmingham was introduced to the staff of the 120,000-circulation daily. Birmingham also will serve as a regional publisher for Cincinnati-based E.W. Scripps Co. with responsibilities for the Evansville (Ind.) Courier & Press and the Anderson (S.C.) Independent-Mail. He succeeds Bruce Hartmann, who last month was promoted to vice president of sales for the Scripps newspaper division. Birmingham has been president and publisher at Corpus Christi since 2004. ... The cell phone containing videos of abuse at a Texas facility for the mentally disabled was found in a clothing store and offered to two television stations before being taken to an off-duty police officer, the man who found the phone testified Monday. Lawyers for two defendants charged for their roles in late-night orchestrated fights among residents at the Corpus Christi State School argued Monday to suppress evidence, including the cell phone. Grainy cell phone videos showing developmentally disabled students forced to fight each other will likely be shown to jurors this week as four former employees at a Texas school go on trial.
