C. Jack Ellis is the 40th mayor of the city of Macon, Georgia. Currently serving his second term, Mayor Ellis was first sworn into office December 14, 1999 becoming the first black Mayor in the city’s 176-year history. Voters embraced his vision to make Macon one of the most livable cities in America, a city where equal opportunities would be afforded to every citizen and economic development would be the highest priority – a city of the future equipped with the physical and technological infrastructure and an educated workforce able to compete in the emerging global market place.
Mayor Ellis was born January 6, 1946 in Macon, Georgia where he attended Ballard Hudson High School. He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from St. Leo College in Florida. He is a retired United States Army senior non-commissioned officer. He served two years of combat duty in Vietnam as a paratrooper platoon sergeant with the 101st Airborne Division. He was awarded three Bronze Stars, the Army Commendation Medal for Valor and Heroism, and the Purple Heart for wounds received in combat. He is a former cable television executive and an executive with the United States Census Bureau. He is the former host and producer of a local community affairs television program, Community Forum.
