Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick Says God is Punishing Him
It is very interesting that Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, who once said that he was on an "assignment from God," is now saying that the Lord is punishing him. He made that revelation s he addressed a crowd at Fellowship Chapel Church in Detroit, where he was participating in the Detroit Manpower Movement event which is aimed at getting more black men involved in mentoring programs, neighborhood patrols and other volunteer efforts."Nothing just happens," Kilpatrick told the crowd. "I'm not being whupped by the devil, I am being punished by my God. I know that my disobedience put me in the situation I am in." Helloo, finally an acknowledgement that he has done something wrong and that this is not a "lynching" as he has said previously. Quite simply put, you play, you pay!
On March 24, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged Kilpatrick and his former chief of staff, Christine Beatty, with conspiracy, obstruction of justice, perjury and official misconduct in a case related to a police whistle-blower trial in 2007. Worthy's investigation began after pager text messages published in January pointed to a sexual relationship between Kilpatrick and Beatty and possible perjury about the nature of their relationship and circumstances surrounding the removal of Deputy Police Chief Gary Brown when they testified in that civil case.
Other records released as a result of a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit brought by The Detroit News and the Detroit Free Press show Kilpatrick and Beatty signed a secret deal to keep the text messages under wraps, as part of the city's $8.4 million settlement of police whistle-blower lawsuits.
The Detroit City Council has said it was not told of a secret agreement before approving the settlement and has since heard three days of testimony from lawyers who were a part of either crafting or signing the agreement. The council also passed a resolution calling for the mayor to resign. Okay, so his recent revelation doesn't jive with his recent actions. Kilpatrick has said over the past two weeks that the council is playing politics. He wants to go ahead with a $300 million economic stimulus plan that would build new police, fire and recreation facilities, raze blighted buildings and build an entertainment district honoring the city's former Paradise Valley area. What he is doing is totally avoiding the situation and, in essence, still pointing a finger at someone else for his behavior.
"I love Detroit," he said during Saturday's event. "I love this city because it is a community that doesn't take no stuff." So, why is he surprised that they want him to resign? He needs to listen to his own words and ask himself what else is God telling him to do, since he feels that God is punishing him. Just my thoughts, you be the judge.....
