PROOF OF KWAME KILPATRICK'S SEX SCANDAL REVEALED IN TEXT MESSAGES

When I think of the number of scandals that have plagued the administration of Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, the first thing that comes to mind is "pimpin' ain't easy." Everything from rumors of wild parties at his mansion to accusations of misapporpriation of city funds has burdened the mayor now in his second term.

Often referenced as the "hip hop" mayor, Kilpatrick and his Chief of Staff Christine Beatty have been found to have lied under oath last summer during a police whistle-blower lawsuit against the City of Detroit as evidenced by newly revealed text messages on city-issued pagers from 2002-2003.

The text messages serve as proof that Kilpatrick and Beatty were involved in a sexual and romantic relationship that has been implied to have been related to the firing of two Detroit police officers.

A county jury awarded $6.5 million to the two officers in the lawsuit against the city and Kilpatrick. The jury said Kilpatrick and the city unlawfully dismissed two officers, who claimed they suffered after investigating allegations of wrongdoing within Kilpatrick's security unit.

Kilpatrick is married, and Beatty was married at the time.

"I'm madly in love with you," Kilpatrick wrote in a text on Oct. 3, 2002.

"I hope you feel that way for a long time," Beatty replied. "In case you haven't noticed, I am madly in love with you, too!"

On Oct. 16, 2002, Kilpatrick wrote Beatty: "I've been dreaming all day about having you all to myself for 3 days. Relaxing, laughing, talking, sleeping and making love."

In his testimony last summer, at one point Kilpatrick expressed anger about claims of an affair between him and Beatty.

"I think it was pretty demoralizing to her — you have to know her — but it's demoralizing to me as well," the mayor said. "My mother is a congresswoman. There have always been strong women around me. My aunt is a state legislator. I think it's absurd to assert that every woman that works with a man is a whore." (He couldn't find another way to characterize this like, "Just because a man and woman work closely together doesn't mean they are romantically involved.")

All this sounds so familiar - very Bill Clintonish.

As referenced in a previous post, Kilpatrick, the son of Congresswoman Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick, was heavily supported and endorsed by talk show host and radio personality Tavis Smiley during his initial run for mayor of the 11th largest and poorest urban metropolis in the United States.

According to his biography, Kilpatrick has been recognized as having made significant economic advancements in efforts to revitalize the struggling motor city by way of aggressive economic policies.

Kilpatrick issued a statement Wednesday night saying the messages "reflect a very difficult period in my personal life."

"It is profoundly embarrassing to have these extremely private messages now displayed in such a public manner," he said. "My wife and I worked our way through these intensely personal issues years ago. I would now ask that the public and the media respect the privacy of my wife and children and of Christine Beatty and her children at this deeply painful moment for our families."

At the time of this posting, we're still awaiting the decision of the Wayne County District Attorney's office as to whether perjury charges will be brought against Kilpatrick or Beatty.
