Lawyer: Ex-Detroit mayor's payments back on track
A lawyer for Detroit's former mayor says his client's up to date — and even early — with monthly restitution payments in the criminal case that drove him from office.
Lawyer Michael Alan Schwartz says Kwame Kilpatrick sent a $9,500 check overnight. It represents $3,500 owed from May and $6,000 due June 15.
The Wayne County prosecutor's office asked a judge last week to determine why authorities haven't tried to revoke Kilpatrick's probation.
Kilpatrick pleaded guilty last year to obstruction of justice and no contest to assault, all related to lies and a text-message scandal over an affair with his chief of staff. Kilpatrick spent 99 days in jail and owes $1 million to Detroit.
There was no immediate comment Monday from the prosecutor's office.
