Basic Facts
McMurdo Station was established in late 1955. It is now the hub of the U.S.
Antarctic Program. The station is made up of over 75 buildings,
including dormitories, a firehouse, water distillation facilities, and even a power plant.
McMurdo is located on Ross Island on Hut Point Peninsula (77 degrees 51 minutes S, 166 degrees 40
minutes E) and is the largest Antarctic research station.
