A Rediscovery Of The Benefits Of The Time Honored Art Of Meditation

As the speed of life gets faster and we find ourselves leading busier and busier lives so we tend to forget about both our physical and mental health and more and more of us are now suffering from stress to some degree. It is not surprising therefore that we are turning more and more to time honored practice of meditation.

As a result of its long history of effectiveness, today meditation is being carried out not simply to bring peace to the mind and lower levels of stress but also to deal with an ever widening range of physical ailments.

Indeed there are many physical benefits to be derived from meditation which slows the heart rate and thus pressure on the heart, reduces levels of the hormone cortisol and other chemicals in the body that are linked to stress and reduces the number of free radicals in the body thereby further helping to reduce blood pressure. It also increases the flow of air through the lungs to help with breathing and can even raise levels of DHEA to help slow the aging process.

As far as its psychological benefits, meditation lowers irritability and anxiety and increases memory and therefore the ability to learn. Consequently, it also gives rise to a positive outlook on life providing you with a feeling of rejuvenation and youthfulness.

Other notable benefits to be derived from meditation exercises  include:

* Producing a general relaxation of not just the body and mind but also of your soul.

* Helping with the healing of various illnesses for which there is an association between the physical nature of the illness and the emotional state of the sufferer.

* Creating an opening of the door into the 'inner self' Which allows for the release of our natural creativity.

* Producing an enhancement to our natural self-confidence resulting in a more dominant and stronger sense of will power.

* Creating an increase in energy that make it easier to face the strains of daily life.

* Providing an increased ability to deal with many vices and addictions ranging from alcohol and tobacco to narcotics.

And so the list can go on and on.

Like everything else in life however meditation can be a powerful force for good when it is used properly but it can also be detrimental to your health when it is not used in the right way. The secret therefore is to know just what guided meditation can and cannot do and to learn the practice of meditation before adding daily meditation  into your usual routine.
