Merchant Services

Anyone who owns a retail store or who is thinking of buying one needs information on accepting credit cards, credit card terminals and point of sales systems. This wikizine explores all this and more.

My Hatred of Transaction Terminals

You know what I'm talking about. Those god damn debit/credit card payment machines that you use whenever you swipe your card at any store. None of them are ever the same in terms of working their menus. Some of them require you to swipe your card vertically, others, horizontally. I just don't understand how SO MANY companies could come up with SO MANY different methods for doing the exact same thing. A debit/credit transaction. So many places have so many machines, with each one posing it's own bullshit problems. However, McDonald's machines are probably the worst.

McDonalds: This damn machine is so large and comes with so many buttons that it could probably be used as a telephone if somebody played around with it for a lengthy period. What really gets me pissed is how on the left side there's a "Credit" button, yet when you want to perform that type of transaction, the screen clearly says to press the "Enter" button. So... what's the purpose for the "Credit" button? Additionally, you are to sign with a stylus on a little green screen which doesn't provide enough room for that task. Either print me a hardcopy receipt to sign, or get the hell out of my way.

Additionally, Target and Walmart's systems are equally retarded. Target's machine will take the card completley out of your hands and will NOT give it back to you until the transaction is finished or cancelled. And Walmart's machines will only allow cash back in increments of 20 dollar bills. So the idea of getting 15, 30, etc amounts of cash back is out of the question. It's my opinion that all three of these machines, as well as the company (Ingenico) who designs them should burn in Hell. Universal machine or bust!

Whether you like it or not, credit cards are a convenience for those people who do not carry cash. Most sales are made with credit cards.

Merchants make more money with credit cards because of impulse buying. The merchant who does not accept credit cards loses customers to the competition all the time.

There are differences among the companies. You just have to look for them.
