The widely used anti-diabetic drug Metformin is able to boost the immune system and increase the potency of vaccines and cancer treatments , says a new study 1 published in the June 3 2009 issue of Nature . Researchers at McGill University and the University of Pennsylvania made the discovery that metformin increases the efficiency of the immune system's T-cells. After an infection or vaccination, our immune system remembers to keep protecting against the pathogens it has already encountered, with the help of specialized B-cells and T-cells. Immunological memory has long been a fruitful subject of study, but the cellular mechanisms underlying the generation ... Read Full Story

Amazon Error: Do NOT buy if you need a code! I specifically bought this book NEW from Amazon because it said it is "now available with MasteringChemistry access". Well, it is NOT included. Which means I have to purchase the access code separately, to the tune of $45. Load of Crap. Interesting read This is actually an interesting and informative read for chemistry. The authors do a great job of explaining plus many worked examples throughout the book. I would also recommend the study guide/solutions manual to get all of the end of chapter questions answered. About Fundamentals of General, Organic, and Biological Chemistry ... Read Full Story

Kudzu, the nuisance vine that has invaded up to 10 million acres in the Southeast, may turn out to be an important dietary supplement for metabolic syndrome , according to researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham 1 . In findings published in the August 26, 2009 Journal of Agriculture and Food Chemistry, studies on animal models revealed that substances found in kudzu root called isoflavones can lower factors involved in metabolic syndrome, such as high cholesterol , blood pressure , and blood glucose. Puerarin , an isoflavone found only in kudzu, seems to be the one with the greatest beneficial effect. This ... Read Full Story

What is Bacteria Metabolism : The series of biochemical reactions carried together within singular cell of the bacteria for survival process is called as Bacteria metabolism. Before analyzing the bacteria metabolism, it is better to now about the bacteria structure and its functions. Bacteria have uni-cellular organization, they grow easily and abundant in nature. Bacteria do not contain nucleus and lacks other advance organelles. Bacteria are also called as single-celled Prokaryotes. The main use of these bacteria content is for transporting chemical compounds into and out of the cell. Bacteria supports catabolism and anabolism path ways .To carry this metabolic pathways, bacteria needs certain ... Read Full Story

What is Amino Acid Metabolism : Amino acid Metabolism is nothing but a series of chemical reaction process responsible for the synthesis and breakdown of amino acids carried for the production of energy for the living organisms. Amino are comprised of oxygen, hydrogen, carbon and nitrogen. These biochemical catalysts form the cellular structure. Amino acid is the only nutrient that contains nitrogen which plays the key role for the formation of different amino acids. Proteins are the organic compounds of amino acids which are the essential nutrients in building the muscle tissue and organs. Amino acids are very essential for building the cell structures ... This website is dedicated completely to metabolic biochemistry. It has many links which you can click on to learn more about a given area. It gives an overview of metabolic biochemistry, talks about carbohydrate metabolism, energy metabolism, lipid metabolism, membrane transport and nitrogen metabolism. It is perfect for revisiing our module UoLBS1015-09 Biochemistry that we have just started.

This website offers an interactive summary of metabolic pathways. The figures are at the same time drawn in a simple manner but they comprise a lot of information. This is definitely helpful in further understanding of Dr. Wells's lectures in BS1015 (Introduction to Biochemistry).

This item displays the structure of the 20 natural occuring amino acids. The item also features the chemical characteristics (e.g. non-polar, acidic) found on the variable R-group and this will be a good revision material for the Biochemistry modular exams.

I'm bookmarking this for students of BS1015 Introduction to Biochemistry beacause we have been asked to review Amino Acids, pH and pK. This quiz helps to do that and gives the answers so that you can check how you are doing.
