The Metropolitan Museum of Art unleashed a red carpet of epic proportions Monday night, as Hollywood's finest celebrities gathered to celebrate the Costume Institute's unveiling of it's Superhero exhibition. The 2008 exhibition of "Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy" brought out celebrities from the likes of George Clooney, to Julia Roberts, to Tom Cruise, and honorary chairman, Italian designer, Giorgio Armani. As with any red carpet event, the night had it's share of amazingly dressed, and, well, questionably dressed celebrities. See below for our favorites in each category. We like: Tom Cruise and wife Katie Holmes. Not only does Katie look amazing, but, this picture makes ... Read Full Story

The main building of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (the Met) is located on one side of Central Park. The ancient Egypt collections in the museum are the most impressive part to me. Thousands years ago, Egyptians made all these colorful carved stones, potteries, hemp fabrics, jades, etc. They are absolutely fascinating and not a bit worse than those that were made in ancient China. Fork artist in front of the Met. Everything is made of forks. I'm mostly interested in the Möbius strip . The Met ↓↓Ancient Egypt collections↓↓ Hemp fabrics thousands of years ago ... The Metropolitan Museum of Art has officially joined the 21st century. In its new exhibit, “ blog.mode : addressing fashion ,” you can view a classic Dior gown and then blog about it. Blog.mode blends the physical and the virtual: garments (mostly, though not entirely, women’s clothing, mostly gowns, but also including shoes, necklaces, bags, and other accessories) are exhibited both in the Met’s galleries and also, via photos, on the blog.mode Web site, where viewers are encouraged to comment on the pieces displayed. The idea is that, while painting and sculpture can seem removed from our understanding, fashion is somehow a more tangible ... Read Full Story

Study after Velazquez’s Portrait of Pope Innocent X , 1953 ( Image Source ) Most Sundays, Geoffrey and I like to have what we call an Urban Adventure . The plan for today called for G and I to head uptown to the Metropolitan Museum of Art on Fifth Avenue, with the intention of checking out their latest acquisition, The Torment of St Anthony – the first painting by the great Michelangelo . But while we were stumbling through the dozens upon a dozens of galleries clotted with Renaissance artworks, looking desperately among them for the one 12-inch square canvas that we’d come to ... James Ensor (Belgian, 1860-1949), Skeletons Fighting Over a Pickled Herring , 1891 Fans of They Might Be Giants are likely already familiar with the name of artist James Ensor , because of the TMBG song “Meet James Ensor” , which is really quite fantastic. Geoffrey had never heard that song before, so I made sure to sing it to him a few times before we went to see the James Ensor exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art ( MOMA ) here in lovely, sweltering midtown Manhattan. I’m not going to go into a lot of background or biographical data on Ensor except to ... Read Full Story

It is hard to credit, when observing the vast multitudes milling about New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art like bargain seekers at Macy’s Thanksgiving Day sale, that until the mid-1960s the cavernous galleries were largely deserted except for the occasional educated art lover. Thomas Hoving, the Met’s director between 1967 and 1977, changed all that.

In a kind of cultural patrimony twist on "You break it, you own it," the Metropolitan Museum of Art today returned to Egypt an ancient Egyptian granite relief fragment that was identified by museum staff as part of a large shrine. The fragment, which has never been on public display at the Met, was on loan to the museum from a collector who claims to have purchased it in the 1970s. It is inscribed with the name of Amenemhat I, who ruled Egypt...
