Awesome Mexican Tradition: Exploding Hammers

We don't full understand what's going on in the following video, beyond that's it is totally amazing. First, check out this video of people slamming explosive-laden hammers into the dirt:

So what's going on in the video? Here's what we've been able to piece together, but please note this is mainly guesswork on our part.

1. It takes place in Chiapas, Mexico.
2. It is some sort of celebration and/or ceremony by the Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional, also known at the Zapatista Army, a formerly violent revolutionary group in Chiapas that has put down arms since 1994.
3. The hammers (maybe!) are part of the the group's ideology -- lots of Zapatista literature talks about the "worker's hammer."
4. Regardless, strapping a bunch of explosives to a hammer and slamming it into the ground looks pretty dangerous.
5. And also amazingly cool.
