Jake Long Top Pick in NFL Draft Signs with Dolphins

It's NFL Draft time, and one decision has already been set in stone. Jake Long, the massive left tackle from Michigan, signed a five-year, $30 million contract with the Miami Dolphins today, and will choose him as the top draft pick Saturday.

With this contract, Long becomes the highest-paid lineman in the NFL, his total contract package could total as much as $57.75 million. But the 315-pound offensive lineman is just a piece in the puzzle as the Dolphins, led by Bill Parcells, begin to rebuild.

Last season, the Dolphins went 1-15, with the offensive line being a source of constant problems. But, the 6-foot-7 lineman should help in that area. Long started 40 games at Michigan, was Big Ten offensive lineman of the year in 2006 and 2007 and finished second to LSU defensive tackle Glenn Dorsey in balloting last season for the Lombardi and Outland trophies.

It's not uncommon for teams to sign players before the draft, but the Dolphins still have eight more picks in the draft, including four of the first 64. The organization is still in the need for more offensive linemen, a quarterback, a receiver, a tight end, cornerbacks, defensive linemen and linebackers, so basically the rest of their team.
