Michael Phelps (born June 30, 1985) is the most successful Olympic athlete. After the 2008 Beijing Olympics the swimmer walked away with a total of 8 gold medals, breaking the previous record held by swimmer Mark Spitz. In 2009, Phelps was photographed smoking from a bong and the photo was released to the tabloids. This will be his first competition since a picture of Phelps was published showing the swimmer inhaling from a marijuana pipe. The fallout included a three-month suspension.

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Speedo extended its sponsorship deal with gold medal-winning swimmer Michael Phelps through 2013, the swimwear company said on Wednesday. Terms of the four-year deal were not disclosed. Last summer, Phelps was reported to be earning about $5 million a year from his combined endorsements.
