Six years since gaining national attention as a 13-year-old golfing phenomenon, Michelle Wie still seeks that first win on the LPGA Tour and dreams of beating the boys on that other pro golf circuit. A trip to Augusta also would be nice. Wie raised a couple of eyebrows at a pre-tournament news conference for the LPGA Sybase Classic on Wednesday, when the 19-year-old matter-of-factly said that she hopes to win a PGA Tour tournament and play in the Masters. Michelle Wie has been playing LPGA Tour events since she was in the seventh grade, drawing the biggest galleries because of her youth and power, but earning little respect from players because of her preferential treatment. In the 62 tournaments she has played over the last seven years, Wie received 53 exemptions or invitations. The next time the 19-year-old from Hawaii tees it up, she finally can feel like she belongs. Wie opened with three straight bogeys before settling down in blustery conditions Sunday for a 2-over 74, easily finishing among the top 20 players at the Q-school to become a card-carrying member of ... Michelle Wie has a clean slate for a future that remains muddled. Considering all she has gone through, there’s simply no telling what will happen next. When she won the U.S. Women’s Amateur Public Links at 13, it would have been hard to imagine her going six years without another trophy to call her own. And when she had a share of the lead on the back nine of three majors her first year as a pro, who could have guessed she would be fighting for her future at Q-school just two years later? Then again, with an average score last year of 76.7—no ... Read Full Story

Michelle Wie is headed back home to Hawaii, this time as a full-fledged LPGA Tour member. The 19-year-old Stanford sophomore will kick off the season at the LPGA’s first full-field event, the SBS Open from Feb. 12-14. “It feels like a clean slate, a new beginning, and I finally feel like I really earned it,” Wie said in a statement Tuesday. Turtle Bay has provided Wie with a couple of high points in her tumultuous young career. She played the first SBS in 2005 as a 15-year-old amateur and finished tied for second with Cristie Kerr, two strokes behind winner Jennifer Rosales. Wie was ... Read Full Story

Weaving her way through a narrow hallway next to the grill room Thursday, Michelle Wie was stopped by a woman who asked if she would pose for a picture with her young daughter. Focusing her camera, the woman asked how she played. “OK,” Wie said with a smile and shrug. If that were an honest assessment, Wie should be in good shape at the LPGA Tour qualifying tournament. Changing her tactics off the tee on the more forgiving Champions course at LPGA International, the 19-year-old from Hawaii hit driver on all but two holes and ran off four straight birdies late in her round ... Michelle Wie could be a savior for the LPGA Tour. And this tour certainly needs help. In 2005 it had 34 tournaments. Next year there will be 23 -- with only 13 in the U.S. Sure the economy is bad, and few Americans are winning consistently. For the LPGA to thrive in the U.S., the Americans need someone to win and to generate more interest.
