In Tierney's world, the reason the majority of scientists agree that global warming is a worsening crisis is dick-measuring. In a column on Obama's science advisor, John Holdren, Tierney spends most of the column quoting Roger Pielke, a climate researcher who's been one of the most vocal critics of the idea that the polar ice caps are melting. According to Pielke, scientists present conclusions about global warming as definitive not because...

Project description: The major aim of the PhD project is to study the effect of environmental disturbances on the composition of bacterial communities. Particular focus will be placed on the investigation of community assembly patterns and mechanisms in temporal habitats where disturbances, such as draught and other environmental changes, occur frequently. In addition, the project will address the resistance and resilience of bacterial communities and how they are related to the strength and frequency of a disturbance. Approaches will include field studies and lab- as well as field experiments. The project also requires the application of a range of molecular techniques to characterize the ... Read Full Story

Lebônê Solutions, Inc. is a social enterprise organization working in off-grid energy delivery and lighting technology using cutting edge clean energy technology. This innovative group was founded in 2007 by Aviva Presser Aiden & Hugo Van Vuuren to help meet the need for off-grid energy and lighting in the developing world. Using microbial fuel cells, Lebônê’s technology generates electricity from soil microbes to power LED lights, cell phones, radios and other devices. For the initial pilot project in Tanzania, Lebônê used Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) technology to provide direct current power for standard high efficiency LEDs and equipment like cell phone chargers. MFCs offer ... Read Full Story

Monday, February 9, 2009 Ph.D. position in microbial ecology Microbial Ecology Research Group The research group Microbial Ecology is part of the Centre for Ecological and Evolutionary Studies (CEES) in the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of the University of Groningen. The group studies the adaptive strategies of prokaryotic microorganisms that allow these to survive in complex natural habitats. One of the topics focuses on the role of microbial diversity in ecosystem functioning. The research is strongly multidisciplinary and includes microbiology, ecology, molecular biology and plant physiology and ecology. The group provides a lively and internationally oriented scientific environment with excellent facilities. Project ... Read Full Story
