Microbial Fuel Cell Technology Generates Electricity From Dirt
Lebônê Solutions, Inc. is a social enterprise organization working in off-grid energy delivery and lighting technology using cutting edge clean energy technology. This innovative group was founded in 2007 by Aviva Presser Aiden & Hugo Van Vuuren to help meet the need for off-grid energy and lighting in the developing world. Using microbial fuel cells, Lebônê’s technology generates electricity from soil microbes to power LED lights, cell phones, radios and other devices. For the initial pilot project in Tanzania, Lebônê used Microbial Fuel Cell (MFC) technology to provide direct current power for standard high efficiency LEDs and equipment like cell phone chargers. MFCs offer a exciting new option for sustainable, cheap, environmentally friendly, and locally targeted power solutions.
By extracting energy and light from dirt, Lebônê has created a scalable clean energy tool that could be used worldwide. Currently, it is working toward providing a tool that improves results for rural health workers, students, small businesses, farmers and families in developing countries. This is just one more promising technological innovation to help resolve energy and environmental issues combined. Good luck and godspeed.
