The Review: Mike Epps, Harris, Faison in Next Day Air
For all those Mike Epps fans who think Mike Epps is the funniest thing out there, then you’ll then this film is a must see! Epps delivers on everything you’d expect with his Eppsisms that are sure to garner the laughs they usually get. For those who are not fans of his jokes you may also want to give this movie a look, for there isn’t an overwhelming amount of corniness in this film. While ‘Next Day Air’ isn’t by any means side splitting, it offers a few laughs here and there while watching an overall cool film.
The story of a misplaced shipment of illegal goods is by no means a new concept, but this film has interesting cameos (including a brief encounter with Benny Boom the film’s director) and a nice twist on the ending, which makes for a better than average action-comedy in that it is unpredictable.
Donald Faison plays Leo the main character and the cause of all the turmoil. Leo is your typical smoking slacker we’ve seen before. Leo should have been fired long before this fateful day, but good old fashioned nepotism helps him out, with his mother (Debbie Allen), being the manager and all. His co-worker Eric, played by Mos Def, isn’t any better given his blatant thievery from the boxes he ships. Mos Def could’ve used more airtime, with his meager 2 (or so) scenes, we don’t get that much quality time with his character, which would have only made the movie better.
Mike Epps plays Brody and Wood Harris plays Gooch, these two are the epitome of dumb criminals, they are the luck fools who come into the illegal riches. Gooch is the sound minded brains of the operation and of course Brody is the comic relief but he also has some common sense about him, which makes Mike Epps tolerable, and not over the top in his antics.
Lauren London plays Ivy. She has one scene in the beginning and if you aren’t paying attention you miss her character name then we never see her again. So, anyone expecting another Lauren London film, will feel down.
All in all, I can safely say I didn’t hate it on a scale of 1 to 10, I’d give it a 6.6. There was definitely room for expansion on other character roles as opposed to others. But if you’d rather forgo spending 10 dollars on a movie ticket and catch it on HBO then you won’t be missing much while you wait.
