Mike Huckabee should keep off the McCain ticket in 2008

I’ve been saying for a while now that Mike Huckabee should stay off the Republican ticket as McCain’s vice presidential candidate in 2008. Surprisingly, not too many of you have really challenged me on that, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a huge movement of Huckabee supporters out there signing petitions and writing letters to the establishment asking for Huckabee to get on the ticket.

Well, OneMom has a great post on her blog about just this topic. Please check it out!

She takes a look at all of the losing presidential tickets over the last 90 years. And Franklin Delano Roosevelt was the only losing vice presidential candidate to successfully run for president. Only two others went on to win their party’s nomination later in their political careers.

Now, I’m sure there are some of you out there who would support getting rid of the 22nd Amendment so Governor Huckabee could be the next FDR and be elected to four terms… I’m sure Governor Huckabee wouldn’t have much of a problem with that either, actually… but I’m sure he knows as well as I do that it’s just not going to happen.

Statistically, the odds of him winning the presidency in 2012 if he’s on a losing McCain ticket now are equal to the odds of a constitutional amendment being repealed… in fact, the elimination of a constitutional amendment would probably have an edge over Huckabee in that scenario.

Look, I know a lot of you are yellow dog Republicans, but just because you vote for McCain doesn’t mean he’s going to win. I’m not telling you who to vote for, but I am telling you to be careful about who you wish to be McCain’s running mate. McCain is probably going to lose in November and he’s going to take the political ambitions of his VP nominee with him.

I don’t want that to be Governor Huckabee.

Let Mike Huckabee campaign for congressional candidates and earn some political clout for his next run. Don’t encourage an unholy alliance between conservative and liberal Republicans to make it easier to vote for a pro-amnesty Republican.
