Legally Blondes DVD Review and Giveaway
Legally Blonde star Reece Witherspoon (Walk the Line, Four Christmases), who played the iconic Elle Woods two times over, apparently didn't get enough of the blonde fashionista concept, as she produced the April 28th MGM DVD release Legally Blondes, directed by Savage Steve Holland, in her image. This updated version stars twins Becky and Milly Rosso (TV's "The Suite Life of Zach and Cody") as Izzy and Annie Woods, Elle's cousins who have picked up the same fashion senses as their cousin. When the middle class twins start at a new prep school, they are the envy of every girl and draw the attention of every guy. There is one exception. Reigning school tyrant, Tiffany (Brittany Curran), does not like the new British babes that have stolen her thunder.
Izzy and Annie must figure out how to use their inherited "Wood's" charm to make new friends, smooth things over with school leaders, while at the same time fighting off the aggressive pursuits of their nemesis.
Legally Blonde promises family fun and a light-hearted comedy, and has a PG-rating to suit. The good news is that the film is free of offensive language and does have a family-friendly message. There is some modest drama with the conflict between the aristocrats and the middle-class kids "on scholarship". There are boy dilemmas, back-stabbing, and sibling rivalry. The bad news is this comedy offers little laughter, even less depth in plot, and lacks the conviction and punch of the Legally Blonde movies. The Rosso twins do a fine job, but seem a bit "green" for their roles.
The question is, did Reece Witherspoon offer up this serving of lame blonde to make her performance as Elle Woods look better, to kill off the series with conviction, or because she actually thought it was a good movie idea? The whole thing is just a bit odd, from the sometimes weird cinematography, to the comical British expressions that sometimes seem out of place.
