I literally StumbleUpon'd The Political Compass , a website that looks to go beyond the traditional left-right political division. They offer a test that breaks down where you stand and compares you to current and past world leaders. (My results are below) "If we recognise that this is essentially an economic line it's fine, as far as it goes. We can show, for example, Stalin, Mao Tse Tung and Pol Pot, with their commitment to a totally controlled economy, on the hard left. Socialists like Mahatma Gandhi and Robert Mugabe would occupy a less extreme leftist position. Margaret Thatcher would be well over to ... Read Full Story

Record turnout in both Iowa and New Hampshire proves that the battle cry of the democratic candidates (and a few of the Republicans) is true – Americans want change. Regardless of age, political affiliation, their sex, race, their economic background we are all dissatisfied with the present and worried about our future. This collective discontent can go one of two waves: Tear us apart and cripple (if not destroy) our country or it can unite and rejuvenate us. The deciding factor of which path we take, I believe is communication. Open, honest, earnest communication – not with our friends, but with those outside of ... Read Full Story

So I watched Thursday nights broadcast of the RNC via MSNBC and was dumbfounded by perhaps the most abject televised display of vanity and self obsession when Keith Olbermann interrupted the analytical/broadcast proceedings to confess his own "apologies" for the RNC's audacious video that dared revisit the tragedy, in "graphic" fashion mind you, of 9/11. How would you like a job that didn’t require you to have a high degree of accuracy, and not be held accountable for wrong decisions or opinions? A job where expressing a point of view or an opinion based more on conforming to a certain form takes precedence over fact-based observations and accuracy of predictions? Think of it: you wouldn’t have to be burdened by the same tiresome, worrisome standards as the rest of the world, namely, that failure to adequately predict what is going to happen costs you your job and reputation. Well, welcome to the world of liberal commentating. In this job, ... Read Full Story

Along with disco music, bushy sideburns, angry ayatollahs and other things we'd just as soon forget, the 1970s brought us a new word: stagflation. Stagflation describes a miserable combination of economic stagnation and inflation. Now, thanks to some scary headlines in the financial press, the word is making a comeback. Consumer prices jumped 4.1 percent last year, the biggest jump in 16 years. The economy began wheezing and sputtering. Gross domestic product grew at a barely-visible 0.6 percent rate in the fourth quarter. Job creation is down, and gasoline prices are up. Does all that mean the '70s are coming back? Hardly. Inflation is ... Read Full Story
