The Utah-based church's support ahead of Tuesday night's vote came despite its steadfast opposition to gay marriage, reflected in the high-profile role it played last year in California's Proposition 8 ballot measure...

John Aravosis is reporting at America Blog that a complaint has been filed against the Mormon Church for campaign finance law violations. At first blush, it looks like there could well be merit. I wonder if the Knights of Columbus should be scrutinized too. These folks wear religion around on their sleeves but all too often feel that (1) they are utterly above the law in terms of in-kind contribution reporting and (2) are exempt from telling the truth in their political ads. Here's the text of the letter:* November 13, 2008 * Chairman Ross Johnson Fair Political Practices Commission 428 J Street, Suite ... Read Full Story

The Mormon Church and politics from Lds Chat Say of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints that regularly exceeds the principle of separation of church and state, and secretly supports the Republican Party is part of local folklore. This belief is based mainly on the activities of the Utah legislature composed mostly of SDJ Republicans, and the habits of an electoral majority Mormon population. However, things are never that simple. Officially, the Mormon church regularly emphasizes that it does not participate in partisan campaigns, and that it respects the separation of church and state. Since Utah became a state, if not even ... Read Full Story

First the LDS church stated they did NOT donate any monies in support of taking away rights from LGBT persons in California through Prop 8. Then, with a little pressure, the they confessed to donating just over $2000.00. More recently however, with a little more pressure, the tax-exempt religious organization that basically owns the state of Utah confessed to contributing almost $200,000.00 to Prop 8. The contributions I’m speaking about are not the ones that came from indivual members of the Mormon church, this money came directly from the LDS’s pocket. Now there is separation of church and state if I’ve ever seen it! ... Read Full Story

I am sorry that so many of my people directed vicious lies and accusations at you. I’m sorry that they could not look outside themselves and realize that your desire to marry stems from a commitment ... Read Full Story
