Mount Everest was rumored to be haunted by a English climber Andrew Irvine. Andrew was the first person to attempt climbing Everest; he failed and died as a result in 1924. A Nepalese climber who scaled Everest aged 76 has finally been named by Guinness World Records as the oldest man to do so, following a lengthy battle for recognition. Min Bahadur Sherchan, now 78, reached the summit of the world's highest peak in May 2008, but later discovered he had lost out on the record because he failed to provide the necessary evidence of his achievement. Instead, Guinness World Records awarded the accolade to Yuichiro Miura, a Japanese climber one year Sherchan's junior who had climbed Mount Everest in the same month. Chinese scientists have begun operating an earthquake monitoring station at the foot of Mount Everest in a bid to learn more about the world's highest peak, an official said Monday. The station, which began operating over the weekend, is located at about 14,000 feet (4,255 meters) in Tibet's Tingri County, said Shang Rongbo, a deputy director with the regional seismology bureau. The station will support real-time collection of data about seismic events along the China-Nepal border, sending it by satellite to research centers elsewhere, Shang said.
