The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today that seven films remain in the competition to pick three nominees for the Oscar for Best Visual Effects. Here's the list of films:

SCREENWRITERS Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have been confirmed as the writers for the X-Men spin-off Deadpool, featuring Ryan Reynolds' wisecracking mercenary from the Wolverine prequel.
Early in December, it was revealed by CHUD that the pair were in the running to pen the screenplay. The pair scripted hit horror comedy Zombieland, starring Woody Harrelson, and also wrote a draft of Spider-Man spin-off Venom.

The Daily Beast recently ran an article discussing Avatar and 3D seemed to indicate that the film adaptation of the comic book Cowboys & Aliens starts shooting this July.
