Several sites in the major metropolitan city of Mumbai were attacked by terrorists the night of Nov. 26, 2008. The most prominent target was the Taj Mahal Hotel. More than 80 have been reported dead and 200 wounded in the attacks.

The United States welcomed Wednesday a Pakistani court's decision to charge seven suspects in connection with the Mumbai attacks. "These indictments are an important step. Pakistan has pledged it would... do what is necessary to bring the perpetrators of these attacks to justice," a State Department official told AFP on the condition of anonymity. A Pakistani anti-terrorism court on Wednesday indicted seven suspects over last year's Mumbai attacks that killed 166 people and all those in the dock pleaded not guilty, a defence lawyer said. Pakistan has been holding seven suspects in connection with the November 26-29 siege in India's financial capital, including the alleged mastermind Zakiur Rehman Lakhvi and alleged key Lashkar-e-Taiba operative Zarar Shah.
