Financial considerations of a cruise ship job

Dear musicians,

One of the most asked questions at Oceanbound Entertainment Inc., is “how much will I get paid”? I agree that this is an important question, but merely comparing numbers of land based gigs with gigs at sea won’t give you an accurate picture.

By accepting a job on a cruise ship you leave behind a number of expenses that are tied to a life on land. I’m pretty sure I don’t need to go into detail since you all do live on land, at least part-time. This makes it obvious then to factor into your considerations the amount of money saved, right?

Expenses can quickly add up to thousands of dollars even when applying conservative calculations.

But I believe that a job on a cruise ship has more to offer than just savings. A job on a cruise ship allows you to detach yourself from obligations that are tied to life on land (at least temporarily) and thus makes for a possible worry-free experience. Not having to worry about whether you car is going to get towed, what your next heating bill is going to be or whether you actually manage to get enough gigs for the month is worth a million bucks.

Besides, people that have been stuck in a 9-5 job for 25 years repeating the same mundane tasks daily, people that haven’t had a change of pace in their daily lives in forever, whose lives seem bland, boring and uninspiring, may have a chance to break the monotony.

A job on a cruise ship can improve one’s social life, will let you travel the world for fee and thus bring you in contact with people of beliefs other than yours, will let you undertake adventures that would otherwise be impossible or outrageously expensive and will let you play music for a living to name just a few of the perks.

Cruise ship jobs are not for everyone though. Some people have a hard time leaving family and friends behind or may not feel comfortable in an environment where some rules and regulations must be observed.

It is thus imperative that you consider many facts associated with cruise ship jobs, not just the few you may have heard from a friend of a friend who worked on a ship 12 years ago.
