Mutts and Moms
Owned by Marina Baktis and Vanessa Chekroun, this dog rescue outfit has made national news because of their involvement with Ellen Degeneres' dog.
Ellen Degeneres & the Ballad of Iggy

I wonder how many dogs and cats will die because people are boycotting animal rescue shelters over the Iggy crisis. As I am sure you have heard, Ellen Degeneres adopted a Brussels Griffon mix from a rescue outfit called Moms and Mutts. Maybe she did or maybe she didn't read the fine print. However, I note that Ellen is no stranger to signing six figure contracts, and must be aware of that sneaky fine print.
One of the clauses was that Iggy could not be given to anyone else, but if the adoption did not work out he had to be returned to the care of Moms and Mutts.
Iggy did not get along with with Eleen and Portia's cats and she gave him to her hairdresser who has eight and eleven year old daughters, who I am sure adored Iggy.
Moms and Mutts called up Ellen to check on Iggy and she fessed up how the dog was now with the hairdresser. They went over and yanked young Iggy out of the children's hands and have now placed him with a new family.
Ellen was naturally upset, and she broke down on her show talking about it:
The owner of Moms and Mutts claims to be receiving death threats.
First, what the fuck was the power hungry Moms and Mutts thinking in creating an international incident with Ellen? The idiotic message was “We are not going to be pushed around by the Ellen DeGenereses of the World”
They have directly upset several people, discombobulated Iggy, and made a total ass out of themselves.
Many people have this constipated view of the world that if there is a law or a provision in a contract it must be strictly followed irregardless of a particular situation. The world is not black and white, and never has been. We do not always have to follow the letter of the law—and most reasonable people don't.
Obviously, Moms and Mutts should have seen, what I am assuming is a good home, and just waived the condition in Iggy's case.
What were they thinking? I can not imagine worse publicity for their non-profit business than taking on Ellen Degeneres.
But, even worse is what they have done to the cause of animal rescue.
The condition they have in the contract is a good one. I once adopted a cat and had to submit references. There was also a home inspection. The adoption papers had the “return to shelter” provision. The groups have these because they do not want the pets to end up abused or on death row.
Iggy has now, once again, been placed in a new home, that I am sure is good. I am not worried about him, Ellen or even her hairdresser's little girls.
But I am worried about all those little animals who are languishing in shelters and on death row right now. Many only have hours to live.
And I have heard a lot of talk how all animal rescue shelters should be boycotted until Iggy is freed.
This is so wrong.
Moms and Mutts has a stick up their ass. But this is not a reason to let hundreds or thousands of dogs and cats die.
In this country it is so shameful that four million pets are euthanized every year. If you or anyone you know is looking for a dog or cat there are so many at the humane society and animal shelters.

What kind of place has a rule that you can't have any children under 14 when you adopt a dog? I rescue dogs all the time. I find them wondering along the road, dumped, abandoned, by their owners. If I can't find their owners, I take them in and care for them. I don't think I would pass the stringent tests of dog adoption agencies today, but all of my dogs have a great life, a giant yard to run in, heat in the winter, air conditioning in the summer and plenty of food and water. My one year old son loves our Bassett and she loves him. I think Moms for Mutts are Nuts if you ask me.
Adoption means you become the legal owner of the animal. Why would anyone have such a stipulation that the new owner does not have the right to give the puppy a good loving home. Moms and Mutts had a great opportunity to become famous and help many more animals but chose to be the bad guys instead. If their intentions were to find good homes they would not have taken a puppy away from children who loved her. No stipulation on the contract will get too many to support them. Their business will go to those who do not make such stupid judgments.
First off, let us all be clear, these two woman are in no way a rescue operation.
The non profit status they enjoy allows them to skip out on paying local and state taxes.
They sell these animals with a contractural agreement, that if for any reason
you as the pet owner, find it impossible to care for the animal. You must return it.
Why? So these two women can resell them again, for additional profit.
This has nothing to do with making sure they find a good home. Clearly Iggy
had one. Or about children under 14.
What this is, folks is nothing more then an elaborate game of " bait and switch".
What we should all do is petition the State of California to
review their process for adoption, revoke their non profit status, and bar them from working with animals professionally for the rest of their lives.
Expose the amount of money they have scammed on back taxes. Make them pay the money back with interest. And, if necessary jail time for fraud.
Personally as a parent, I find what they did cruel not only to Iggy but two the the two little girls who had already bonded with the dog. This screams of Emotional Abuse. If they think nothing of abusing children, what would they do to an Animal?

Either these stupid bitches give back Iggy to the little girl or I say punish them for eternity. Make their shallow fucked up power hungry lives miserable.
I hope they rot in hell!@

I hope mutts and moms lose their business!!!! You ladies suck!!!!!
As one who has adopted a LIFETIME companion from Mutts & Moms, I can assure you that Marina is not power mad, shallow or any or the other lovely names you very well read posters are using.
You don't know her, or how her operation works or why it works so well...because of the rules and Ellen D and Portia DeR are not to be excepted becasue they are "celebrities". Ellen has thrown away a dog previously, the feelings of the animal (or her hairdressers kids, for that matter) are immaterial. It's what will boost her ratings.
Funny how the hairdressers family had the TV camera there even before the police....hmmm.
If I were as crass as some of you posters I'd say you were a bunch of sucky ass kissing starfuckers, but that would be rude.

I agree with a previous comment that everything is not black and white. I do have to question what fees and costs were paid by Ellen and Portia to obtain this animal. If the fees were in excess what a standard adoption program supports, then I agree that this is merely extortion of the animal by the "supposed" non profit Mutts and Moms. Ellen does not appear to be the type of person that would put her personality and/or ratings ahead of the welfare of a small dog. If the dog had been given to a loving family who cares and loves it, why remove it. Now, if the dog had been given to another puppy mill or food for some pit bull ring I would support the removal. I agree that Mutts and Moms has tarnished what the "right thing is" for pets. As the pet populaiton is out of control, why cannot people see what she did as a good responsible thing. There is so much talk over followup with a dog, why is there not that kind of followup and concern for foster children and the thousands who abuse that system and the children who are destroyed for life? Our countries priorities are messed up, turn a blind eye, ignore the obvious and then complain about it later. Good luck world, we are going to need it.
there once was a rescue for mutts
some moms with their heads up their butts
they acted like nazis
and loved papparazzis
but ended up hiding in huts

First off, to all you people who think they know the legal issues involved in this case, you are all wrong.
Lets start off with the owners of this company, none of you know them, none of you know their history or personal background. Do not judge them on how they control their company. They are two people you love dogs and who care for these animals.
This is how Mutts and Moms was created. A non-profit rescue company for dogs. Who told any of you that they sold this dog?? no "six digit figures" were involved in this contract. And for those who are unaware of how adoption works, heres the 411:
an adoption agency can take back any animal if either the contract is not abided by or the animal is in a harmful environment. Ellen and Portia did not abide by the contract. You're right heathermaizy, you would think she would read the fine print but she didnt. and thats not Mutts and Moms fault. Its hers. Just like adopting a child the same rules apply.
When a child in an abusive home, foster care will take them away even though the parent does have legal rights to the child. None of you dont think of these things when you decided to comment on issues like this.
Also, have any of you ever realized the power of publicity? or celebrities and publicity? Just a little insider for all of you to know - when Marina and Vanessa went to the hairdressers house to sign the contract (which THEY didnt want to sign - opposed to what is said in PEOPLE magazine) the media was already at their house. This was BEFORE Ellen went on her show and cried to the public about the dog. They (Ellen, Portia and the hairdresser) are the ones who called the media - all for a stunt of publicity. Mutts and Moms never wanted this publicity. They are happy with the down-to-earth life they lead.
I'm sure you are all wondering why I feel so passionate about this, Marina Baktis, who is originally from Montreal(as am I) is a distant relative of mine. None of you know or can even understand what she is going through. So before ANY of you go around and comment on the internet that Mutts and Moms has "a pole up their asses" maybe you should find your facts and educate yourselves on the truth and dont get involved in the fake life of Hollywood!

If Mutts and Moms is so great, then why is the new "approved" adoptive family allowing this little dog, Iggy, to be exploited on the "Entertainment Tonight" show?
Ellen did not follow the contract she probably signed but she did not abandon this little dog and gave it to what she considered good loving people. I think the dog would have been a happy puppy living with those two young girls. I think the Mutts and Moms should have done an investigation and checked to see if the family would be o.k. before jerking the poor animal from their home. To me that was cruel on their part. What was their real reason? What were they trying to prove? A homeless animal found a home and they tok it away basically.
