Since many of you seem to be Hayao Miyazaki fans, here are some news I just learned about yesterday. From Asian Movie Pulse : Isao Takahata, Studio Ghibli co-founder and director (Grave of the Fireflies, Only Yesterday, My Neighbors The Yamadas) has made the very exciting announcement that he will be directing a new feature-length film. Takahata is the “other” half of Studio Ghibli, and one of Japan’s most famous anime directors. With this new film, Takahata will be breaking a 10-year hiatus (his last feature film, My Neighbors the Yamadas, was released in 1999). His new film, Taketori Monogatari (The Tale of the ... As you know, ever since my friend Émilie helped me discover the man's body of work, I have become a big fan of Hayao Miyazaki. Beginning with Princess Mononoke ( Canada , USA , Europe ) and Spirited Away ( Canada , USA , Europe ), and then with Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (Canada , USA , Europe ), I was hooked! The problem with such excitement was that I could have gone through this genius' entire body of work in the span of a few days. Hence, I decided to pace myself and try other styles to expand my anime ... Read Full Story

I just stumbled upon this article over at Japanator regarding a new animated film which is to be released in Japan on November 21st. Now if you were to look at the picture above you would be hard pressed to think of anything else but Studio Ghibli. The famed animation studio which has bought the creations of Hayao Miyazaki to the world is possibly the greatest feature film animation studio in the world at this very moment. Thing is, that picture ain't from Ghibli. read more Read Full Story

This is a review of the motion picture score My Neighbor Totoro by Joe Hisashi . “Of Hisaishi’s early lighthearted works for Miyizaki Totoro has the most memorable personality” I’m only three scores into my Hisaishi review series and already I’m running out of introductions that resist redundancy. I’ve already referenced his gorgeous themes and how every orchestra he uses seems more energetic as a result of his conducting. I’ve stated that each score manages to stand on its own individual merits despite all his works featuring the same thematic and stylistic base. Well, check that, all but one: My Neighbor Totoro. The film ... Read Full Story

Studio Ghibli and co-founder Hayao Miyazaki must be very happy this year. Over on the Asian Movie Pulse blog (via SlashFilm) they say that Isao Takahata, one of the co-founders of Studio Ghibli, has announced that he will be directing a new feature-length animated film. Takahata will direct a new film called Taketori Monogatari, or The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter in English, which is an adaptation of the classic 10th century folktale (known as The Tale of Princess Kaguya). After a nice ten year hiatus since he completed My Neigbours The Yamadas, Isao Takahata is back at work directing the next feature film from Studio Ghibli. Taketori Monogatari, which translates as The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, will be an adaptation of the story considered to be the oldest surviving Japanese folktale. It is an incredibly well known story, at home, much as Grimm's Fairy Tales are in the West. I recall that Kon Ichikawa made a...

Level-5's Ni no Kuni: The Another World is, in general, a pretty standard JRPG. However, it's a pretty standard RPG that takes place in a Studio Ghibli (Spirited Away, Ponyo, Princess Mononoke) world, and is thus magical. It really feels like you're inhabiting a Ghibli movie, from the appearance of swarms of cute little spherical characters to the lush forest environments. The frequent animated cutscenes and the persistent voice acting (every...
