You can be either your best friend or your own worst enemy. Its true we are responsible for most of what happens to us. We are either reactive or proactive, critical or encouraging, hopeful or pessimistic, these are moment by moment daily choices we make. But most of us aren’t aware or awake enough to recognize our patterns of behavior and thought. And until we gain this awareness we keep doing the same thing over and over again and getting the same results. I know at times my own thought processes cause me to lose sight of the bigger picture or lose faith in ... Read Full Story

Why do we hold onto things and people long after the ‘happy’ expiry date? Maybe because we don’t know what to replace them with? Most people ‘know’ when something isn’t working. We all have an intuition, a niggle or a gut feeling when things are not as they should be. But we tend to ignore it because acknowledging it would mean having to do something about it. I mean who wants to let go of the dream, the fantasy or the happy ever after? We stay in jobs we hate because the alternative might be to face the realization we don’t have the skills ... We all have people in our lives who push our buttons. Mainly because most of us have ’stuff’ we haven’t dealt with. It would easy to pin the blame on the bully but realistically people only have as much power over us as we allow them to have. Words are simply words until we attach meaning to them. Ever been in an argument with your partner and yelled “You are just like my Mother/Father/last partner”. Most of us don’t recognize it is not what our partners are saying which is making us angry but the fact they are triggering emotions from an unresolved issue ... Read Full Story

I wish I could say I was Master of my emotions but alas I am a mere mortal struggling to find my feet in a chaotic world. My body betrays me often makes me feel things which cloud my judgment and fuel my panic. The one emotion I have the most trouble with is resentment the feeling of life being unfair or weighted against me. I struggle when people seem to have expectations of me yet don’t hold themselves to the same standard or so my thinking would have it. Us Gemini’s I must admit have a whole heap of trouble being told what ... Read Full Story

In the show My Own Worst Enemy Christian Slater plays a character with two personalities. I won't get into too many details about the show but the gist of it is that Slater's character is a spy who voluntarily had a microchip with a second personality implanted in his brain by the agency for whom he works. The reason for the microchip is the agency is supposed to be able switch between the two personalities to suit their needs. You may be wondering what this has to do with linguistics, well...the agency is appropriately named Janus after the figure from Greek mythology that has ... Read Full Story

Yeah, that whole airport scene is pretty upsetting. You know what's even worse, though, as far as the corruption of the human spirit is concerned? Modern Warfare 2's online multiplayer. The cycle breaks down like this: You play against hateful people who call you brave new swear words as they wipe the floor with you, which in turn makes you more hateful -- repeat ad nauseam. This new hate can even extend beyond the confines of the game, and...

LAWRENCE — Jacob Branstetter had just kicked an improbable 57-yard field goal in the final seconds of the first half to pull Kansas to within eight points against Oklahoma on Saturday and he took off in a dead sprint toward the Jayhawks' dressing room.I assume he was headed toward the dressing room, at least. For all I know, he might have kept running all the way to Allen Fieldhouse and dunked over Cole Aldrich.Branstetter was jacked...

It's one thing to lose at home to a perceived lesser conference foe, but it's a completely different story when it happens like it did for Nebraska on Saturday. After tying a school record with eight turnovers, the Huskers could only blame themselves for their 9-7 loss to Iowa State

It is a debate that has been raging for a good 10 or 15 years now, should the Currie Cup include all 14 unions, or just the so-called big 5/6?
