Dear Friends, We recently received some encouraging testimonies from several people in Myanmar (all of whom live in the region where Cyclone Nargis made landfall) who were blessed to receive their own copies of the Bible as the result of contributions to the Bibles for Believers Fund . The first testimony is especially moving as it is from an older woman who had been Buddhist her entire life until one of our partners put the Word of God in her hands. We hope you are blessed as we share them with you. Khin Myat My name is Khin Myat of Bawing village and I ... Read Full Story

Australian budget airline Jetstar defended its flights into Myanmar on Monday after rights campaigners said the service was helping prop up the country's military regime. Jetstar defended its four weekly flights from Singapore to Yangon as a "positive for the people of Myanmar" and denied making payments to officials in the Southeast Asian country. Singapore-registered Jetstar Asia, a Jetstar affiliate, was one of eight companies named by Burma Campaign Australia -- which uses Myanmar's old name -- as directly or indirectly backing the junta to the tune of up to 2.8 billion US dollars in revenue. "Jetstar believes the provision of viable air links ... Read Full Story

The United States has protested to Myanmar's military government over the alleged mistreatment of an American citizen held on suspicion of inciting unrest, the US embassy in Yangon said Friday. Myanmar-born Kyaw Zaw Lwin, alias Nyi Nyi Aung, was detained on arrival at Yangon airport on September 3 but his arrest was only confirmed this week. Myanmar state media accused him on Thursday of plotting to stir up protests by Buddhist monks and of having links to groups behind a series of bombings in the country. US embassy spokesman Drake Weisert said that a consular official had been allowed to visit Kyaw Zaw Lwin ... Read Full Story

Myanmar on Wednesday accused a Myanmar-born American who was secretly detained three weeks ago of seeking to incite political unrest. State television news said Kyaw Zaw Lwin confessed that he plotted with dissident groups outside the country, and accused him of being linked to several activists inside Myanmar who planned to set off bombs. It said authorities, acting on a tip-off, arrested Kyaw Zaw Lwin on Sept. 3 on his arrival at Yangon airport. Fellow activists reported his disappearance, but there was no word of his fate until Tuesday, when the U.S. Embassy announced that one of its officers had been allowed to visit ... Read Full Story

Myanmar, officially the Union of Myanmar is the largest country by geographical area in mainland Southeast Asia. It is also known as Burma. As the "Union of Burma," Myanmar achieved independence from the United Kingdom on 4 January 1948. It became the "Socialist Republic of the Union of Burma" on 4 January 1974, before reverting to the "Union of Burma" on 23 September 1988. On 18 June 1989, the State Law and Order Restoration Council adopted the name "Union of Myanmar."

Myanmar is bordered by the People's Republic of China on the north, Laos on the east, Thailand on the southeast, Bangladesh on the west, and India on the northwest, with the Andaman Sea to the south, and the Bay of Bengal to the southwest. One-third of Myanmar's total perimeter, 1,930 kilometres (1,199 mi), forms an uninterrupted coastline.

Myanmar's diverse population has played a major role in defining its politics, history and demographics in modern times. Its political system remains under the tight control of the State Peace and Development Council, the military government led, since 1992, by Senior General Than Shwe. The Burmese military has dominated government since General Ne Win led a coup in 1962 that toppled the civilian government of U Nu. Part of the British Empire until 1948, Myanmar continues to struggle to mend its ethnic tensions. The country's culture, heavily influenced by neighbours, is based on Theravada Buddhism intertwined with local elements.
