Whenever the word ‘bacteria’ is mentioned, most people will think about it negatively. The truth is there are bad bacteria as well as good bacteria. Bad bacteria often cause illnesses or diseases; and the good ones help in keeping the body healthy. Did you know that the largest class of all creatures on earth is bacteria? They are single cells that eat and reproduce. Of all infecting agents, the bacteria are the most common cause of hospitalized illnesses and infections, especially in developing countries. Most short term illnesses are caused by bacteria, but with the right antibiotic, it can easily be stopped. Most illnesses ... Read Full Story

Polymerase chain reaction is superior to serology for the diagnosis of acute Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection and reveals a high rate of persistent infection.BMC Microbiol. 2008 Jun 11;8(1):93Authors: Nilsson AC, Bjorkman P, Persson KABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Diagnosis of Mycoplasma pneumoniae (MP) infection is traditionally based on serology, which may require more than two weeks for diagnostic antibodies to develop. PCR-based methods offer earlier diagnosis. During a community outbreak of MP infection, we compared semi-nested and real-time PCR of oropharyngeal swabs with serology for diagnosis of MP infection at different time points after disease onset. PCR-positive individuals were followed longitudinally to assess the persistence of MP DNA ... Read Full Story

Sensitive and rapid detection of Mycoplasma pneumoniae by loop-mediated isothermal amplificationKansenshogaku Zasshi. 2008 May;82(3):168-76Authors: Yoshino M, Annaka T, Kojima T, Ikedo MFor establishment of a method for rapid diagnosis of Mycoplasma pneumoniae in clinical specimens, we designed and evaluated a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay, using a set of primers targeting the SDC1 repetitive element of the M. pneumoniae genome. The method showed rapid and specific amplification for all the strains of M. pneumoniae tested (Type I and II), within 1 hour at 65 degrees C. No cross-reactivity with the most common causative organisms bacterial pneumonia was observed. The detection limit was shown as ... Read Full Story

It’s 1:30 in the morning, and I’m up with Little Man. He’s laying on my lap, I’m stretched out on the couch waiting for him to (please hurry up!) finish his bottle so we can go back to bed. He apparently is savoring every drop of his formula and doesn’t appear to be in a hurry like I am. Anyway, I cannot believe how horrible I feel. And I cannot believe it’s getting worse, not better. I’m considering calling in. It just sucks to do that. I have to drive up to work to get ready for a sub if I do that…and then, ... Read Full Story

For years, die-offs among bighorn sheep have been attributed to pasteurella, a bacterial parasite typically found in the lungs of those pneumonic bighorns. Now, though, experts are beginning to believe the real culprit may be mycoplasma ovipneumoniae, a

(English intro to Spanish lang. post) Spanish and German scientists had three interconnected papers in Science last week. They reveal in great detail protein complexes, metabolic patterns and ARN expression in Mycoplasma pneumoniae. The bacteria have one of the smallest genomes known among free-living organisms. The big discovery is that by all these three [...]
