Charlie Weis likes his team's chances of earning a Bowl Championship Series berth — if No. 19 Notre Dame keeps winning. Gator Bowl president Rick Catlett does, too. Catlett said the Gator Bowl would love to have a Fighting Irish team that finishes 10-2, but can't imagine it happening. "I can tell you that four BCS bowl directors are hoping they finish 10-2 and in the top 14 in the BCS poll," Catlett said. That's because Notre Dame, with its tradition of eight national championships, seven Heisman Trophy winners and a national fan base, brings TV ratings and strong ticket sales. "Everyone involved in ... Read Full Story

With the playoffs just around the corner it’s time to figure out just where these teams will land. BC School Sports might have to resort to some strange tactics to sort things out. Western Conference If Vancouver College beats Notre Dame, they win the conference outright. If Notre Dame wins that game and New Westminster loses to Earl Marriott, then Notre Dame wins the conference. However, if both Notre Dame and New Westminster win this weekend, there will be a three-way tie for first place in the conference. Eastern Conference If Centennial beats Terry Fox, they win the conference outright. If Terry Fox wins ... Read Full Story

Decked out in black jerseys, Tennessee took three South Carolina fumbles and turned them into touchdowns as the Volunteers beat the No. 21 Gamecocks 31-13 Saturday night. Jonathan Crompton threw two touchdowns, Montario Hardesty ran for two more and Rico McCoy forced two fumbles as coach Lane Kiffin grabbed his first win over a ranked opponent. After warming up in their traditional orange home jerseys, the Vols (4-4, 2-3 Southeastern Conference) took the field in Halloween-inspired uniforms. South Carolina (6-3, 3-3) fumbled on its first two drives on a rainy night, having entered the game with only five for the season. The Gamecocks began ... Read Full Story

Here is Gainesville Sun Sportswriter Pat Dooley's latest SEC power rankings. Although I agree with the first three, I think he has some serious flaws after that. For example, he has Tennessee behind Georgia. My rankings are below, please feel free to weigh in with your rankings or opinions. Dooley's Rankings 1. Florida: Gators finally put it all together 2. Alabama: Still some hurdles to get to Atlanta 3. LSU: Tigers get their second big chance to make an impression 4. Auburn: Just when you thought the Tigers were dead 5. South Carolina: Steve Spurrier needs a win badly this week 6. Georgia: Just ... Read Full Story
Sen. Orrin Hatch, a Utah Republican, is still disappointed that the University of Utah did not get a chance to play in last seasonÕs national championship college football game despite being undefeated. Like Hatch, we do not approve of how the top division of college football crowns its champion. But we also do not believe Congress should meddle in how a sport chooses its champion. The senator certainly strayed from the path of common sense Wednesday when he urged President Barack Obama to have the Justice Department investigate the Bowl Championship Series, or BCS. The department has plenty of more important issues to deal ... Read Full Story

Notre Dame beat Navy 43 straight times in a streak that began in 1963. Now the 19th-ranked Fighting Irish have lost to the Midshipmen twice in three seasons under Charlie Weis. Craig Schaefer sacked Jimmy Clausen in the end zone for a safety with 60 seconds left Saturday, and Navy held on for a 23-21 victory in South Bend, Ind. The last time an unranked Navy team beat a ranked Notre Dame team was 1936.

The Southeastern Conference sticks together. Spend an entire holiday season attending West Coast bowl games, and you'd never hear a Pac-10 pride chant. Yet the most football-crazed, rivalry-driven, animosity-defined conference in all of college athletics shares success with a conciliatory "S-E-C! S-E-C!" Go figure. However, the Mad Hatter and his Bayou Bengals could seriously put that loyalty to the test if they cost the Southeastern...
