NFL reviewing details of Burress shooting

A review of details surrounding Plaxico Burress shooting himself in a nightclub last November has begun by National Football League commissioner Roger Goodell, the league announced Friday.

The league will consider the former New York Giants star's situation and decide if Bureess should be allowed to play in the 2009 gridiron season or suspended under the league's personal conduct policy.

Burress faces charges of criminal weapons possession and up to 3 1/2 years in prison if convicted. His case has been suspended until September with a trial not likely until next year amid talk of a plea deal.

Goodell has the power to suspend Burress even without a guilty verdict under terms of the personal conduct policy.

Burress caught the title-winning pass last year in New York's Super Bowl triumph over New England but in the wake of the controversy was released by the Giants two months ago and has yet to be signed by another club.

Burress, who had signed a five-year contract extension worth 35 million dollars last September, has caught 505 passes for 7,845 yards and 55 touchdowns in nine NFL seasons with the Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers.
