The word Neuro means understanding the brain and how it operates. Linguistic refers to communication aspects, verbal and non-verbal, and Programming relates to the behavioural and thinking patterns of people. Hence, the name Neuro Linguistic Programming came into being. Richard Bandier, an information scientist, and John Grinder, a linguist, first developed NPL in the 1970s, since they were intrigued by the influence that people had over each other, and others who were able to copy those with the most influence.
