11/5/09 - Sci-fi fans are finally getting their due in just-released "Gentleman Broncos," the latest flick from "Napoleon Dynamite" director, Jared Hess. A quirky, lo-fi celebration of the dweeby world of mythical creatures, spandex-clad voyagers and the pasty people who love them, "Broncos" is a weirder than weird trek through the bizarre realm of science fiction - and the equally bizarre realm of rural Utah.

Director Jared Hess wasn’t expecting much when “Napoleon Dynamite’’ was submitted to the Sundance Film Festival against his will in 2004. But the little indie film that could was picked up by Fox, and took in more than $44 million on a roughly $400,000 budget.

Vampires may be the monster du jour, but the rambling, shambling zombie has been riding a decade-long resurgence of popularity as unkillable as the ghouls themselves. And most of those interpretations of zombie-dom hew fairly close to the standard depiction of the recently un-dead: nasty disposition, decaying flesh and an insatiable hunger for human meat. But what happens when one of the living dead is, more or less, just like you and me?  

The big opening night film at Fantastic Fest was Jared Hess' Gentlemen Broncos, his third feature film following Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre previously. In short, I didn't like it much, despite my hope that I would. I'm a very big fan of Napoleon Dynamite, but hated Nacho Libre. Gentlemen Broncos is slightly better than Nacho, but that's not saying much. It has some occasional humor, thanks to the brilliant Jemaine Clement, but I didn't...
