Steve Lopez was rushing back to his office at the Los Angeles Times when the sound of Beethoven made him stop. Before him was a ragged looking homeless man playing a violin with the name Stevie Wonder scrawled on the side. Lopez had no clue this chance meeting with Nathaniel Ayers would lead to "The Soloist," a New York Times best-selling novel and critically acclaimed film.

Here's the deal: Audiences aren't buying into dramas right now. Comedies, comic book-inspired films, action movies, teen films...those are getting the attention of moviegoers. Anything that makes us forget about what's happening in our world and gets us caught up in a total fantasy experience for a couple of hours is doing well at the box office. So, in this climate, it's not the wisest move to unspool something as serious and thought-provoking as The Soloist . Come on, now is not the time of year we normally see films of this ilk, even when the atmosphere isn't as poisonous to dramatic films as ... Read Full Story

"Sometimes people randomly cross paths, and forever will be changed. That's the subtle, yet profound, message of The Soloist, a deeply moving and deeply human film about people and what, and whom, they connect with. Robert Downey Jr., who is effortlessly charismatic, plays Los Angeles Times columnist Steve Lopez, whose job it is to report on the character and characters, of Southern California. But even a (slightly) jaded reporter can be profoundly touched by a story he reports on, and then allows to unfold in real time. The subject of Lopez's column is Nathaniel Ayers (Jamie Foxx, also in a stellar turn), a homeless ... Read Full Story

The Soloist Musician Nathaniel Ayers: A true story My first thought was to write a review of the film, The Soloist , which is about the charismatic homeless musician, Nathaniel Ayers.  Jamie Fox stars as as Ayers and Robert Downey, Jr. as Steve Lopez, the Los Angeles Times journalist who penned the book upon which the 2008 film is based.  However, rather than deconstructing the film, already done by many critics, I am just going to talk about the relationship between the two men. Steve Lopez comes off as a world-weary columnist in search of a much needed story who finds his inspiration in a rag-tag street musician he happens to meet in ... Read Full Story
