Extra points: Darren McCarty makes TV debut

Mac's behind the mike Darren McCarty, below, cleaned up real good for his debut Monday night as a some-time studio analyst for Versus. A sharp suit and tie, hair neatly trimmed and combed -- darn, he even shaved for his new gig. Who was that guy? McCarty, who has retired as a player, was in the studio for Versus' coverage of the Red Wings' game at Nashville. And it didn't take him long -- his pregame comments, in fact -- to figure out whom to put the pressure on in a Wings game. "To me, the... Read Full Story

Canadiens defenseman Brisebois retires

From:  ap.org
Montreal Canadiens defenseman Patrice Brisebois retired Thursday, ending his 18-year NHL career with plans to drive on NASCAR's Canadian series. An emotional Brisebois marked the occasion by wearing the Stanley Cup ring he won with the Canadiens in 1993. "I wore it today for the first time since 1993 because I told myself that I'm a winner," the Montreal native said through tears, addressing his coach from that year, Jacques Demers. "No one can ever take that away from me." The 38-year-old... Read Full Story

Goal Line Report Previous entry: Showing Salary Cap Smarts by Patrick Hoffman on 11/20/09 at 04:00 PM ET Comments (0) I know that this title sounds mysterious but believe me, it’s a good thing. On Wednesday, New York Rangers forward Sean Avery was part of a Youth Hockey Clinic series that took place at Rye Playland, the team’s former practice facility. You can check out the photos here . I also wanted to remind you Blueshirt fans that friend of the blog Jim Cerny... Read Full Story

Perfect ending for Crosby as Pens lift Stanley Cup

From:  ap.org
Sidney Crosby lifted the Stanley Cup, injured knee and all, with a smile of satisfaction as wide as a goal crease. A few handoffs later, the silver trophy was passed to Mario Lemieux, and how fitting. Two stars, two generations, two captains joined together by one Stanley Cup that took some bad teams and the good drafts that followed them, a tremendous comeback and one unlikely Game 7 goal scorer to accomplish. The Penguins overcame the NHL's 38-year-old Game 7 road jinx, Crosby's mid-game... Read Full Story

Well Oiled Gretzky, Messier turned loss into title

From:  ap.org
Back before Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier became, well, Wayne Gretzky and Mark Messier, they were a pair of budding superstars trying to shake off a loss in the Stanley Cup finals. The next year they were champions. A quarter-century later, Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and the rest of the up-and-coming Pittsburgh Penguins are striving to copy the achievement. Dispatched in four games by the four-time champion New York Islanders in 1983, the Gretzky and Messier-led Edmonton Oilers got back... Read Full Story

Missing Kid: Crosby absent before Game 3

From:  ap.org
Sidney Crosby was nowhere to be found, hidden from sight before the Pittsburgh Penguins play the game that likely will tell them if they have any chance of overtaking the Detroit Red Wings and winning the Stanley Cup. At the rink? Sorry, no Crosby sighting there as the Penguins rested Monday after losing two games in two nights in Detroit, putting themselves into a deep, deep hole from which only one of 32 teams has previously escaped during the finals. Doing interviews? Nope, it was a rare... Read Full Story

Stanley Cup flashback: Red Wings beat Penguins 3-1

From:  ap.org
The Stanley Cup finals opener was full of flashbacks. Pittsburgh superstars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin were slowed down and the Detroit Red Wings scored some fortunate goals. Johan Franzen scored the go-ahead goal late in the second period and Chris Osgood made 31 saves, helping the defending champion Red Wings beat the Penguins 3-1 on Saturday night in Game 1. Franzen and Brad Stuart had goals that went off Pittsburgh goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, whose sat on a shot that trickled in for... Read Full Story

Bettman not waging personal fight with Balsillie

From:  ap.org
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman insists he is merely trying to keep the Coyotes in Phoenix, not block Jim Balsillie from buying the team and setting up shop in Ontario. Bettman sat in a hotel ballroom in the heart of Hockeytown on Saturday and spent much of his time answering questions about the struggling desert-based Coyotes franchise that landed in bankruptcy court against his will. Just hours before the Detroit Red Wings began defense of their Stanley Cup title in the finals opener against... Read Full Story

Mr. Hockey still hurting over death of wife

From:  ap.org
Mr. Hockey is hurting. Gordie Howe's wife, Colleen, died three months ago and life hasn't gotten any easier for the Hockey Hall of Famer. "You can think you're a big, strong guy, but if something like that happens, it makes you as weak as a kitten," Howe said in an interview with The Associated Press before Game 5 of the Stanley Cup finals in Detroit. "I watched her when she choked, put her head back and went. That was hard to take." The 81-year-old Howe planned to be in Connecticut on... Read Full Story

Bylsma looks for picture perfect ending for Penguins

From:  reuters.com
PITTSBURGH (Reuters) - As a player, Dan Bylsma's Stanley Cup Game Seven moment as a player has been captured in a photograph that he thinks lies buried in a box in his basement. Now coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Bylsma is preparing for another Game Seven but hopes Friday's showdown with the Detroit Red Wings will this time produce a different picture. Six years ago, Bylsma missed his chance to break open a scoreless Game Seven for the Anaheim Ducks when he failed to swat the puck past... Read Full Story
