A community portal about Nepal with blogs, videos, and photos. According to Wikipedia.org: Nepal, officially the Kingdom of Nepal , is a landlocked Himalayan country in South Asia, bordered by China to the north and by India to the south, east and west. Nepal is a kingdom of various geographical features, and is culturally rich. More than 80% of Nepalese follow Hinduism, which is higher than the percentage of Indian Hindus, making it the single most Hinduic nation in the world. For a small territory, the Nepali landscape is uncommonly diverse, ranging from the humid Terai in the south to the lofty Himalayas in the north. Nepal boasts eight of the world's fourteen highest mountains, including Mount Everest on the border with China. Kathmandu is the capital and largest city. The other main cities include Bharatpur, Biratnagar, Bhairahawa, Birgunj, Janakpur, Pokhara, Nepalgunj, and Mahendranagar. The origin of the name Nepal is uncertain, but the most popular understanding is that it derived from Ne and pal.

Nepal's opposition Maoist party on Saturday announced a fresh, month-long round of anti-government protests, accusing the new administration of failing to address its demands. The former guerrillas, who waged a decade-long war against the state before winning elections in 2008, said they would launch nationwide protests on Sunday, culminating in a three-day general strike in December. The Maoist-led government fell in May after the president overruled their decision to sack the head of the army, and since then they have held regular protests, preventing parliament from sitting and paralysing the capital. "We have been compelled to announce a third round of protests because the ... Read Full Story

The legendary French movie star turned animal rights campaigner Brigitte Bardot has written to Nepal's president urging him to stop a mass animal sacrifice from going ahead next week. A temple in Nepal will host what is thought to be the world's biggest ritual slaughter in which hundreds of thousands of buffaloes, goats and birds will be sacrificed to the Hindu goddess of power, Gadhimai. In a letter seen by AFP Friday, Bardot urged the president to outlaw the sacrifice of animals for religious purposes ahead of the festival, calling the practice "violent, cruel and inhumane." "I personally find it hard to imagine that ... Read Full Story

Nepal's historic peace pact, which ended a decade of violent communist insurgency, turned three years Friday under the threat of unravelling. On this date in 2006, the shadowy leader of Nepal's Maoist guerrillas, Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda, emerged in the capital from underground to ink a comprehensive agreement with the major parties. The pact pledged peace, a new constitution and general elections within six months of that. The pact ended an uprising that killed over 16,000 people and displaced thousands. It also brought in a sea change in the conservative Hindu kingdom, transforming it into a secular republic. However, since the election last year, ... Read Full Story

He is famous for his fiery speeches, but Nepal's Maoist leader Prachanda projected a dramatically different image last week when he danced in the streets with one of the country's top actresses. Pictures of the former warlord grinning awkwardly as he jigged with the star during a mass anti-government protest dominated newspaper front pages in Nepal, where the former rebels have been working hard to soften their image. For a man who spent years hiding in Nepal's jungles and hills, directing a Maoist guerrilla war that left at least 16,000 people dead and brought the Himalayan nation to its knees, it was a dramatic ...
