Kevin Williamson Gives Update On Scream 4
As you may or may not know, my comrade-in-arms Kevin “The Editor-in-Chief” Coll has declared war on the upcoming extension of the Scream franchise.
Coincidentally, Mr. Coll has penned four less-than-favorable articles about the 4th installment of Scream—one jab for every sequel, maybe?
In his earliest piece dated January 13 of this year, Coll derided the film for having a “CW type feel with that seemed like Dawson’s Creek thrust into Halloween,” which is a sentiment that I find incredibly ironic considering that Kevin is a CW guy, through and through. He’s still sporting the old school 90210 sideburns and is pretty much the living incarnate of Dawson Leery.
(Go ahead and email him with a question about his crush on Zac Efron).
However, despite Coll’s attempts to muffle this scream, some really cool news has recently hit the film websites. Thanks to Fused Film, we already know that the Neve Campbell and the duo that is Arquette will return for this film and that Kevin Williamson will write. And now, thanks to Geek Tyrant.com, we have some great new details to share with you.
For starters, Scream 4 will be in 3D. Now, I know that I trashed the 3D concept for Halloween 3, but I truly think it will work for Scream. These movies have always lived up to their name and were great at eliciting those jump-out-of-your seat moments. With 3D technology incorporated into their arsenal I think we’re in store for some delightfully frightful fun.
Like always, the story will include an ensemble cast. However, in addition to the three main characters from the original trilogy, this film will introduce us to a new core group of characters that will take the reins for installments 5 and 6. That’s right this is more than a sequel; this is the start of a new cycle.
There’s even talk of including some self-deprecating humor via Stab 10 in 3D. I must say that I love the use of the metafictional film-within-the-film plot device.
My only question? What are the odds that they’re going to finally make Sidney Prescott the killer? Apart from a war vet, she has got to have the worst case of post-traumatic stress disorder ever suffered by a human being. Sooner or later, Sidney has to snap.
Okay, I take it back. I have one other question. Since Williamson always focuses on those teen and young adult social circles, how is he going to weave Facebook, Twitter, texting, and social media into the world of Scream? Hmm…I smell a marketing campaign.
