There aren’t many things that make Bill Belichick cry. But when Tedy Bruschi recently announced his retirement, the robot-like coach was forced to choke back tears. Ex New England Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi may be Patriots most popular player Said Belichick, “I’ve had the privilege of coaching a lot of great players and leaders in the National Football League, and I’ll just put Tedy up there with all of them and above all of them. There’s no player that I think epitomizes more of what I believe a player should be on the field, off the field, really, in every situation.” For a coach ... Read Full Story

Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo is wearing a brace on his injured right knee and walking with crutches. Last year's NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year walked through New England's locker room and into the training room on Thursday. He did not talk with reporters. Mayo sprained the medial collateral ligament in the first quarter of Monday night's 25-24 win over the Buffalo Bills and could miss up to eight weeks, the Boston Globe reported. The Patriots said only that he had a knee injury and did not practice Wednesday. His agent, Sean Kiernan, has not returned an e-mail seeking comment. On Tuesday, coach Bill ... Read Full Story

New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman has suffered a broken arm, The Herald has learned. That’s a bad, um, break for Edelman, the rookie who had been battling for that third receiver spot with Sam Aiken. The former Kent State quarterback had been impressive since camp. He was not at practice today. Interestingly, the team still cut Joey Galloway with this going on. Edelman had 21 catches for 188 yards, while also returning punts. His timetable to return is unclear, and so is when he hurt it. Don’t be surprised to see the team add another receiver soon. Maybe it’s Brandon Tate from ... Read Full Story

Kevin O'Connell is still the backup quarterback for the New England Patriots. This time it's intentional. O'Connell moved up from No. 3 to No. 2 last year when Tom Brady was injured in the season opener and Matt Cassel was promoted to starter. Cassel was traded to the Kansas City Chiefs this offseason, and now O'Connell will be the one who steps in if Brady is hurt. "Last year was an unfortunate situation, but I was able to get a lot of repetitions that I wouldn't have gotten as a third quarterback," O'Connell said Wednesday after the team wrapped up a voluntary, three-day minicamp. ... Nobody likes to say it, but Sunday's game might be decided by who can fool whom, at least when the Dolphins have the ball.

Last year in Foxborough, Mass., the Dolphins unveiled their updated single wing, the Wildcat, while New England had Matt Cassel starting only his second game after Tom Brady's injury. Both coaching staffs clearly were nervous -- the Patriots limited Cassel's repertoire, and Dolphins coach Tony Sparano admitted Thursday...
