It is called New York State when there is need to distinguish it from New York City. Because a significant majority of the population is concentrated in the southern portion around New York City, the state is often regionalized into Upstate and Downstate. New York is the home of Ellis Island, where many immigrants in the early 20th century arrived in the United States.
As far as I can find out there are two datebooks out for 2010 featuring the beautiful nature photography of Frans Lanting. The first features his landscapes, the second is devoted to the Buddhist inspiration of Pema ChÖdrÖn .

If there is one place in New York City that would be called as an Important monument to visit, it is the Liberty Island that houses the Statue of Liberty. I guess this is a known fact universally, which was why the place was heavily crowded on the day we visited. I guess it is crowded most of the days. Perhaps one of the busiest place on earth is Times Square in New York City. But on the day we visited the place, it had just done raining and there were not many people trotting around.
