SEATTLE (Reuters) - Real Salt Lake won their first Major League Soccer championship on Sunday with a penalty shootout victory over David Beckham's L.A Galaxy after the title game had ended in a 1-1 stalemate following extra time. Beckham scored his penalty but Galaxy captain Landon Donovan was among those to miss as Salt Lake won the shootout 5-4 to capture a surprise victory just four years after entering the league. Yura Movsisyan and Nat Borchers scored to lead Real Salt Lake to a 2-0 victory over Los Angeles on Saturday night, ending the Galaxy's 10-game unbeaten streak. Goalkeeper Nick Rimando made five saves for his third shutout as Salt Lake (4-6-3) posted its first road win and stopped a seven-game winless streak. The Galaxy (2-2-9) suffered their first loss since a 3-2 defeat to Colorado on April 4. There is absolutely no doubt that Real Salt Lake (RSL) deserved this tournament. They went up against the Los Angeles Galaxy for the MSL Cup on Sunday. RSL’s victory was entirely astonishing particularly against the Galaxy. RSL wasn’t even likely to make it into the playoffs. They weren’t even expected to defeat Columbus or Chicago in the first two rounds of the playoffs but they were able to work as a group and build upon each other’s strengths in order to secure the title. “It’s a Cinderella story, it really is” said RSL midfielder Ned Grabavoy. SANDY, Utah, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- Andy Williams broke a tie in the 80th minute Wednesday and Real Salt Lake improved its playoff chances by downing New York 2-0. Salt Lake (10-11-7) moved past Toronto, D.C. United and FC Dallas with the victory and its 37 points leaves it just one point behind New England for the final MLS post-season berth. HOUSTON, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- Brad Davis scored in the 81st minute Saturday, leading Houston to a 3-2 Major League Soccer victory against Real Salt Lake. Davis also assisted on goals by Brian Ching in the second minute and Geoff Cameron in the fifth, becoming the second MLS player this season with double digits in assists (10).
