And so the 53rd London Film Festival has come to a close. For the past two weeks cinema venues in the West End have hosted world premieres ( Fantastic Mr. Fox ), Royal Gala screenings ( Bright Star ) and closed with another world premiere: Nowhere Boy – the story of John Lennon’s youth, directed by Sam Taylor Wood . What makes the London Film Festival different from all the rest is its lack of exclusivity: it is the people’s film festival! There is a wonderful “no nonsense” approach to the proceedings. It is all focused on celebrating the joy invoked by cinema. There ... Read Full Story

Of course, to hear Peterson tell it — as he sort of does, courtesy of Tom Hardy’s ferocious performance in the ultra-stylish drama-biopic “Bronson” — he was really just an artist trying to live his life to the fullest. It’s just that his art was violence, and his canvas was other people. No one should be willing to buy that, but Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn, who made the astounding “Pusher” trilogy, takes that declaration as a jumping-off point, at least, and a defining structure. Refn’s film presents Peterson, who eventually adopts the name of his “alter-ego,” Charles Bronson, as a sort of avant-garde ... Read Full Story

“I didn’t do anything wrong.” —Frank, Pusher In the alternate moral universe of the Pusher trilogy, a micro-epic docudrama about the Copenhagen drug scene from Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn, Frank (Kim Bodnia), the lowly dope dealer in the series’ first entry, is correct: He didn’t do anything wrong. Throughout the trilogy, Refn focuses acutely on various minor or semi-major players in the drug trade without broadening his scope to the...

At a time when Danish cinema boasts a large number of first rate directors, Nicolas Winding Refn stands out among his peers for his raw talent and ambition. The son of filmmaker Anders Refn, Refn was born in Copenhagen in 1970 but spent much of his teenage years living in New York, which had a great impact on his cinematic sensibility. He started film school at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts, but was expelled for throwing a desk at a...

I've been saying this for years, and it is now quickly coming true. Thanks in part to his one-two punch in 2009 (Bronson and Valhalla Rising) Nicolas Winding Refn is becoming a recognizable name. Bronson is finally about to open in the US, and between that event and the Toronto premiere of Valhalla Rising, which was purchased by IFC, Refn is talking to the press about a few projects. I've read some mixed reviews of Valhalla Rising, but...

Nicolas Winding Refn is a great filmmaker. He's also an avid toy collector and a man obsessed with violence and criminals. Watch how these things come together as we enter the mind of the man who gave us Bronson.

You could say that the mark of a good film maker is that they give you want you want.  And if that is true then I suggest that the mark of a great film maker is that they give you what you want while also giving you something completely different.  And this is the case with Nicolas Winding Refn and Valhalla Rising. Now seven films into his career Refn continues ... not to change, exactly, but to continue finding new facets of himself and his...

I do think that the choice of Keanu Reeves to play the legendary Doctor Jekyll from the Jekyll and Hyde stories in Nicolas Winding Refn's new film is a bit of a stretch, and it does feel more like a studio requirement than anything, but speaking about the casting Refn sounds rather more positive. In fact it sounds like he's positively intrigued by the idea and that that casting Reeves in Jekyll was probably far from a studio choice....Visit...

There are two Mads Mikkelsens at TIFF this year. One is the lean, sinewy, tough-guy Mads, the one his friend, director Nicolas Winding Refn, calls “the Danish Steve McQueen.” That’s the Mads who plays a mute, man-killing brute in Refn’s moody Viki...

IFC Films has acquired the U.S. distribution rights to Nicolas Winding Refn’s “Valhalla Rising,” marking the first pick-up by a major U.S. specialty distributor during the Toronto Film Festival.  The film - which premiered this past Friday - is Danish filmmaker Refn’s follow-up to “Bronson.”  It stars Mads Mikkelsen as One-Eye, a mute warrior of supernatural strength, who journeys into the “heart of darkness” after being held prisoner for many...
