Nigeria Saturday ordered a top-level probe of a 23-year-old Nigerian arrested over a botched attempt to blow up a US airliner preparing to land in Detroit, as the suspect was identified by his father. "The Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, has directed Nigerian security agencies to commence full investigation of the incident," an official government statement said. Information Minister Dora Akunyili said Abuja had learnt with "dismay the news of an attempted terrorist attack on a US airline. If there was any refreshing relief the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja offered its residents and visitors, it was the atmosphere of order and calmness, which was lacking in Lagos, the former capital of the country. So scenes of traffic jams in the new city are giving concern to people.

A court in The Hague has ruled that it has the jurisdiction to try a case brought against Shell Nigeria by Friends of the Earth Netherlands (Mileudefensie).   The Dutch environmental organisation and four Nigerians took Shell and its subsidiary Shell Nigeria to court for polluting the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. Shell disputed whether or not the court had the authority to hear the case. The company has now accepted that it has.
