 “The wonderful D90” 2009-11-05
By Arthur Samuels (Southfield, MI)
This camera is an upgrade for me from the D70. The D70 was a good camera however; the D90 is a great camera. I’ve had it for about 3 weeks now and it takes great pictures. I’ve taken well over a 1000 photos to date. I also brought the SB-900 flash to go with the camera and the two combine work superbly. The thermal overload protection on SB-900 is annoying but that for a different review. Back to the D-90…I currently have not nor do I in the near future plan to use this camera for video so I cannot comment on the video ability of this camera. I’m having too much fun with stills. There are a lot of value added features on this camera. The features I’ve used the most so far are Commander Mode, Automatic Bracketing and in some post production processes including the D-lighting, filter effects, color balance and image overlay on a some what regular basis. But you don’t want to over do it. These processes eat up your battery. The best feature and a great tool for me is the ability to use the camera in the Commander Mode and control several flash units directly from the camera. I’ve used it with both SB-800 and SB-900 flash units and it works flawlessly. I also like the feel of the camera in my hands. I fits comfortably in my rather large hands and I can reach all the controls without twisting my fingers in knots. I am just using the Live View screen to view the camera setting. It certainly makes it easier to read than look at the readout on top of the camera especially in dim lighting.

“Nikon D90…BUY IT FROM AMAZON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” 2009-11-05
By Daniel Kaplan
I’ve owned Nikons since 1971 and D50, D70,D70s and a D80’s before purchasing my D90. Just by the way the D90 handles low light/high ISO conditions makes the camera worth the price!!!! The improvement over the D80 is remarkable!!!!! I got really nice results shooting @ 3200 and H 1.0 (6400)!!! and this is shooting drag racing!!!! Good prices and then add the ease of buying from Amazon….. I added the Satechi vertical grip battery pack which I really like so far……. That is a good deal too with the timer and remote that came with it…

 “Almost perfect” 2009-11-04
By Danielle L. Roe (Denver, CO)
I was a long time Nikon D50 user who decided to upgrade to the D90. The first camera body I received had a clear front-focusing problem (everything shot at a distance of more than a few feet was blurry/OOF). I returned that camera body using Amazon’s excellent customer service, and received a new camera body within 2 days. The new body did not have the same front focusing issue, but after reading a lot of reviews AFTER purchasing, it seems a lot of D90’s came out of the factory improperly calibrated, and even Nikon’s customer service was telling people, it’s faster to exchange it than send it to use for calibration.

All that said, the working D90 is great. The LCD screen is awesome. The two command dials take some getting used to but are great. I love that there are more option buttons on the camera body so more settings can be changed without going into the menus. Lots of menu options. One option I also learned about after the fact explained the SOOC (straight out of the camera) softness. I was very frustrated after a week or two that I seemingly could no longer take a sharp picture. The D90’s default sharpness setting is set low (in custom settings), resulting in an apparent softness SOOC. The setting is designed for working in post-processing the image for sharpness, etc. However if you don’t post-process every image, it does leave you with an overall soft feeling of your images. The setting can easily be changed in camera to compensate; when I changed my setting I experienced tremendous improvement in the SOOC sharpness of my images.

I’m still learning the camera, but overall have been very happy with it so far. I love the high ISO capabilities (there’s still visible noise at higher ISO’s, but it’s great to be able to take pictures without a flash in lower light than with the D50) and the mulitiple focus points (there are 11). All in all, a great camera for more than an entry level dSLR.

 “A move up from my D200” 2009-11-02
By Guido UCLA (Thousand Oaks, CA USA)
A technological improvement over my D200. The HD video is fun and works well. The buffer isn’t quite fast enough or large enough for really fast shooting. Other than that, great.

 “Awesome camera, awesome value!” 2009-11-02
By K. Stigler (Cincinnati, Ohio)
This camera is an upgrade for my D70, which I dearly love. Short and simple, this camera is awesome. the 3D focus is amazing and the ease of the controls are very intuitive. Of course if you have a D70, you have a slight learning curve since some of the buttons are in a different location (such as bracket) or button driven rather than menu driven…

I was looking at the D300 and the D90, and for the price as well as features, the D90 won out. Ken Rockwell gave high marks for the D90 as well, which helped my decision.

You won’t be disappointed with this camera!
