It is a slimmer, brighter, sleeker and more lightweight redesign of the earlier Nintendo DS model. It was also designed to be aesthetically sleeker to complement Nintendo's Wii, and to appeal to broader commercial audiences. It was announced on January 26, 2006, more than a month before its first territorial launch in Japan on March 2, 2006 due to overwhelming demand for the original model. It has been released in Japan, Australia, North America, Europe, New Zealand, Singapore, and defined regions in South America.

A new R4 series card was annouced by GBalpha (M3 Team), R4i RTS, which achieves the Real-Time Save function on your DS. It’s the first time that M3 team stated that there were three verisons of R4i produced by them: R4i, R4i SDHC and R4i RTS. Now the number of R4 clone have become countless and shoddy like fatal locust. At first sight people can hardly believe that these three clones are made by a well-known flashcard team. Perhaps something related with their new card M3i Zero? Who knows what will be the next! My friends you have the initiative whether to support or oppose, you are the main stream of the video game after all.
