When I saw Eight Belles put down Saturday at the Kentucky Derby after breaking both of his front ankles, I swore off horse racing then and there. I used to be a big fan of the sport, and believe me, I have given the track a lot of my cash over the years, but when I saw that incredibly beautiful animal being killed, it broke my heart. These scumbags will never get another penny from me, that's for certain. Two years ago, the world was shocked at the Preakness by the awful shattering of 2006 Derby winner Barbaro’s right hind leg. They tried to ... Read Full Story

Eight Belles, the filly (female horse) that had to be euthanized after suffering severe breaks to both her right and left ankles, was also the horse that Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton bet on FTW! Hillary Clintons pick to win the Kentucky Derby this year came in second, but was later euthanized on the track. The tragic moment at Churchill Downs cast an eerie spell over the campaign and the candidate who recently compared herself and her candidacy to the only female horse running in the race, Eight Belles. At a campaign in event recently in Jeffersonville, just north of Louisville, Kentucky, Clinton encouraged her ... Read Full Story

By ED FOUNTAINE for the New York Post - May 6, 2008 -- THEY murdered that poor filly, Eight Belles, in the Kentucky Derby, and someone has to take the fall. Why not her jockey, Gabriel Saez, a 20-year-old kid from Panama? So says PETA, which descended on the tragedy like vultures before Eight Belles' body was even cold, petitioning the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority to suspend Saez pending an investigation into the horse's death. Eight Belles, PETA said, was "doubtlessly injured before the finish" but Saez "mercilessly" whipped her to death. (more) Despite PETA's claims, here's what we know: Eight Belles, trained by ... Big Brown (L) and Eight Belles (R) Eight Belles, the second place finisher in the Kentucky Derby, had to be put down after she broke two ankles. I have to admit that I never much thought about how hard the horses are ridden during the races. Michael Rosenberg of Fox Sports has some thoughts on the matter that are worth reading. As someone who enjoys rodeo, it also makes me think about the animals involved in that sport. There are some who think that portions of the rodeo are cruel. I've sometimes thought this myself when it comes to roping the calves, but as ... Read Full Story

Churchill Downs has ended after one season a stakes race in England that gave the winner an automatic birth into the Kentucky Derby. Churchill spokesman John Asher told The Courier-Journal that the Kentucky Derby Challenge Stakes at Kempton Park didn't produce as much betting as hoped. He also said the economy was a factor. Mafaaz, a 3-year-old colt, won the spot in the 2009 Derby, but owner Sheik Hamdan opted not to make the race. Asher...

A conversation I had at lunch Saturday afternoon in Shenzhen, China, which, at 12 time zones away, is literally the other site of the world: "Why have I heard of Louisville?" "It hosts the Kentucky Derby." "Of course." If Louisville were not home to the world's most famous horse race, how would I have answered that question? Mostly likely the question wouldn't have been asked. One of my biggest gripes about Louisville is locals who gripe about...

Either the Red Sox win this afternoon at Fenway or they go home for the winter. There’s only one man who can absolutely guarantee this must-win game. Now pitching for the Red Sox: Barack Hussein Nobel Obama, the southpaw who wants to get both of his paws on your wallet. So what if he’s 48 and has never played the game? He’ll get the “W” - that’s the lesson of this Nobel Peace Prize nonsense. He can throw the ball in the dirt in front of home...
