Noelle Pikus-Pace has her own hotel room in Italy for the next few days, a perk of being the top-ranked American woman so far this season on the World Cup skeleton circuit. It'll make what's certain to be an emotionally tough time a little bit easier. The World Cup tour has made its way to Cesana Pariol, Italy, the site of sliding events at the 2006 Turin Games. Canada's Jon Montgomery and Britain's Shelley Rudman won World Cup skeleton races Friday on the 2006 Turin Olympic track. Katie Uhlaender led the Americans with a fifth-place finish in Italy. Montgomery's two-run time of 1 minute, 55.54 seconds was about a half-second better than Latvia's Martins Dukurs . Canada's Jeff Pain took third, while Americans Eric Bernotas and Zach Lund tied for ninth. Rudman's time of 1:57.46 was easily good enough for gold in the women's race. Germany's Marion Trott was second and Canada's Mellisa Hollingsworth finished third. Uhlaender is still recovering from a series of offseason knee surgeries. She finished one spot ahead ... Latvia's Martins Dukurs won the men's World Cup start to this Olympic season, finishing in 1 minute, 39.75 seconds on the 2002 Salt Lake City Games track. He was 0.52 seconds — an eternity in skeleton — better than Germany's Sandro Stielicke, and 0.62 seconds ahead of Great Britain's Kristan Bromley in third. In the women's race, which was cut to one run because of a heavy ... Read Full Story

Individual tryouts are complete for U.S. bobsled and skeleton Olympic hopefuls. Starting Monday, it's about becoming a team. The new U.S. World Cup teams headed to western Canada on Sunday for two weeks of training on the track that will be used for the Vancouver Olympics this February. It's an important time for the team, since no U.S. skeleton racer or bobsled driver will likely get more than 30 or so runs down the course in Whistler, British Columbia. And until the Vancouver Games begin, this two-week look is the last the Americans will get. "The more information we share, what equipment we're on, ... Read Full Story
