Nokia Corp. said Tuesday it is axing 220 jobs at research and development units in Japan as the world's largest mobile phone maker continues to cut costs. Last week it announced 330 job cuts in Finland and Denmark at its R&D operations that globally employ 17,000 workers. The company's stock closed down 1.5 percent at euro8.93 ($13.37) on the Helsinki Stock Exchange. The announcement came a month after Nokia reported its first quarterly loss since it became the world's biggest mobile phone maker in 1998. EU competition regulators ended antitrust action against Qualcomm on Tuesday after rivals withdrew complaints that the US microchip company had abused its dominant power in 3G markets. The European Commission "has investigated whether the royalties that Qualcomm has been charging since its patented technology became part of Europe's 3G standard are unreasonably high," a statement said. While it had "not yet reached formal conclusions," it said "all complainants have now withdrawn or indicated their intention to withdraw their complaints," leading the commission to "focus its resources and priorities" elsewhere. Prague, Czech Republic / Madrid, Spain Nokia Siemens Networks has been selected to participate in a Long Term Evolution (LTE) trial in the Czech Republic, as part of LTE trials that Telefónica will be running in about half a dozen countries in Europe and Latin America.
